From Gloucester to Glastonbury and Weymouth to Wadebridge the South West has a proud tradition and a comprehensive network of reservists and cadets who volunteer their free time to support their local communities and the regular armed forces.
The South West of England boasts more than 2,000 reservists across the Army, Air and Naval Forces. Reservists are ordinary men and women that take on the extraordinary challenge of training to the same standards of their counterparts in the regular armed forces. In return they learn new skills, earn tax-free cash, make friends for life and have the opportunity to be deployed on operations across the world; doing their country and community proud.
The region’s young people also play their part. The South West’s teenagers buck the stereotype of bored troublemakers. Instead, thousands of 12-18 year olds spend their evenings, weekends and some of their summer holidays learning field craft and survival skills, earning qualifications, competing in sailing competitions, flying gliders and practicing drill.
The Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association supports the reserve units and the armed forces youth organisations in the seven counties of the South West of England. The WRFCA has a wide remit: from PR support for reservists and cadets in the South West to administration of the units’ grounds and works.
