Over 500 Cadets from across Wiltshire will be going head-to-head in competitions and displays this weekend (26 and 27 June) in celebration of Cadet150 – the 150th anniversary of the Cadet movement – at the British Armed Forces and Veterans event at Trowbridge Park.
The two action-packed days will see a series of displays, a mock battle and a mini field gun run competition, as well as a parade, allowing the Cadets from local Air Training Corps (ATC), Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) and Army Cadet Force (ACF) detachments to show off their skills.
Wiltshire’s ATC and ACF will be battling it out to prove they are the best in the county in the mini field gun run. Four teams of ten cadets will be racing 150 metres whilst pulling a gun weighing over 100lbs. The team to pass the finish line first will be crowned the winners and the best in Wiltshire.
Another of the highlights of the weekend will be a mock battle between Senior Cadets and their Adult Instructors, with the young people supported by a Cadet gun crew using a 105mm Light Gun. The Cadets will be storming the arena at 12.40pm and 16.10pm.
Throughout Saturday the Cadets will be taking over the arena, with Swindon Squadron ATC Band and Trowbridge ACF Bugles providing the entertainment. The ATC will display one of their Gliders and Trowbridge SCC will undertake a silent drill, cutlass and club display.
Sunday will see over 320 cadets join the Veterans Parade from Polebarn Road to the Civic Hall. The parade starts at 2pm with the salute being taken at the junction of Fore Street and Market Street at 2.10pm.

Wiltshire has always played a proud role in the cadet movement. The county has over 1,630 cadets supported by more than 315 adult volunteers. Across the UK, 131,000 young people and 25,000 adults are involved.
Tony Dalby-Welsh, Chief Executive Officer of the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, said today that Wiltshire’s weekend of celebrations will highlight “the spirit of fun, excitement, adventure and community service of the wonderful cadet movement, which is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary organisations in the world and offers such great opportunities to so many youngsters from all backgrounds.”
Major Mark Cray, Cadet Executive Officer of Wiltshire ACF, added: “Few organisations offer so much to young people in helping to develop qualities of leadership and teamwork as well as initiative, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility.
“This weekend is a great opportunity for the Wiltshire’s Cadet Forces to show off their skills as well as giving the public an opportunity to see how varied and rewarding it can be for young people.”
